"Having fun and having funeral, there is little difference."

"Why do you kill?" asks Yoyo Mung's character Ivy in KILLER, puzzling over why
Tung (Jordan Chan) and his business savvy buddies continue to work as savage triad
killers. I'd like to ask the same thing of the HK filmmakers who continue to crank out this
amoral garbage. How many senseless "killer" movies do there need to be? There must be
a market for this stuff cuz they keeps getting made.
As expected, KILLER is nothing special. A band of five (Jordan, Simon, Ken and
Mark) are
famous killers in the triad world. They don't use guns to commit their crimes- just blades.
Keepin it old school, all they need is a knife and a skimask.
Born gangster Simon Liu (Po) is a cold, tough club owner who surveys his territory with 24
hr
video survelliance, Ken Wong (Yung) is a flashy party type, and Jordan Chan (Tung) basically
plays Jordan Chan. Mark Cheng (Mantis), who literally has about 3 speaking lines, predictably
plays a cold and hard guy who lives to shag. Sometimes I think he should just drop the
charade and become a porn star.
Then there's Yoyo Mung (Ivy), as Po's neglected girlfriend. Like in A Hero Never
Dies, Yoyo
can't seem to pick her boyfriends. She always chooses killers. Lonely, she starts seeing
Jordan secretly. Will Simon get mad? Do you really care?
Actually, if you like your movies dumb, dank, and bleak, this unambitious triad
flick does its
job competently. The cinematography is slightly interesting and the actors treat the material
seriously. The plot just talks about triad politics, evading the law, brotherhood, etc.
Nothing we haven't seen before, and it took at least 3 screenwriters to come
up with this.
So if the sight of Claire Yiu snorting lines of coke off Mark Cheng's chest, a blown-off arm flying
thru the air like a frisbee, a gigantic gang rape, suicide by high rise apartment base jump ala
Pauline Chan, and a guy getting sodomized by an air gun sounds like fun, microwave some
popcorn and curl up with a copy of Billy Chung's KILLER.
