"How come you know diamonds are planted on my dick?"
Representing the dregs of HK cinema, The Blood Rules is yet another movie in which the
protagonists are criminals. We can all relate to criminals, right? Everyone loves a crook.
Mike (Michael Wong), Jean (Suki Kwan, billed here as Shooky Kwan), Shoot (Lam Suet)
and Q (Jackie Lui) are a team of robbers. They get their orders from a corpulent pungent
fried tofu loving geezer called Uncle Lam (Wong Tin Lam, fresh from his role in The Mission).
Though these four are cold blooded killers when robbing, they have their softer sides.
Jean, the romantic of the group, is hopelessly obsessed with Mike, who is a married father.
Shoot owns an aquarium and enjoys showing off his fishes to the local kids.
After successfully completing a jewellery heist, Lam assigns what is meant to be their last
job- to steal the diamonds off of notorious gangster Chicken Sam's dicky. You read
that correctly.
However, (blood) rules are broken. Q gets cocky and shows off his money to impress
chicks (a no-no). During Operation: Diamond Dicky, Chicken Sam captures Q and threatens
castration if Q doesn't reveal his conspirators. Guess what he does.
With their plans in ruins, violent retaliation from Chicken Sam's gang and the police and
SDU in hot pursuit, it looks like they may not get to go scuba diving in Bermuda after all.
This is a DDDD (damn disappointing directorial debut) for veteran editor Marco Mak. It
does at least have a FDSE (few decent seconds of entertainment). Perhaps the best
scene is when the detective (Stephen Au) re-enacts his theory of how a crime went
down, which is cleverly edited with the scenes from the crime itself. Though a lower
budget film, The Blood Rules also has a few nice digital effects to add interest.
There's little difference between The Blood Rules and other recent movies like
The Group,
The Cheaters, Killer or Partners. All involve a team of criminal protagonists who generally
meet a
tragic end. And all suck.
