Despite Hong Kong's proximity to China, there have been relatively few actors from
the Mainland in Hong Kong cinema. One exception is Yu Rong Guang, a Beijing Opera
disciple whose commanding presence and athleticism have helped him carve out a
successful career in action and martial arts movies since 1985.
With few exceptions, Yu Rong Guang is usually cast as the villain, a role he has played
to perfection in such films as Kirk Wong's Rock N' Roll Cop with Anthony Wong,
My Father is a Hero with fellow Mainlander Jet Li, Man Wanted opposite Simon Yam,
Project S with Michelle Yeoh, Big Bullet with Lau Ching Wan, and the
Donnie Yen films Shanghai Affairs and Ballistic Kiss.
American audiences witnessed Yu Rong Guang in a heroic starring role as the title
character in Yuen Wo Ping's martial arts masterpiece Iron Monkey (1993) when
Miramax rereleased the film in 2001. The previous year Yu was seen in a smaller
supporting role in Jackie Chan's Hollywood film Shanghai Noon.
