Pop singer Rowena Cortes was best known in the late 70's and early 80's, popular for her
Cantonese and English songs, TV theme songs, sweetness and youthful beauty.
She began her career by winning the 1976 Hong Kong Popular Song Contest. She recorded
many English songs such as Dolly Parton's 'Jolene', 'At Seventeen' by Janis Ian, and Smokey
Robinson's 'Shop Around'. Many of her songs were penned by Hong Kong musician
Anders Nelsson.

In 1978 John Woo gave her a starring vehicle as a pop star in his 1978 film Follow the Star,
opposite veteran Roy Chiao. She also co-starred in an early Leslie Cheung movie for
Shaw Brothers, Teenage Dreamers (1982), also known by its Chinese title "Lemon Cola".
She acted with Leslie once again in her final film, the coming of age drama Energetic 21.
