Pioneering Shanghai-born singer Rebecca Pan Wan Ching became famous in the 1960's,
and has since accumulated over 40 years of show business experience.
Pan is credited with introducing Mandarin songs to an international audience, traveling the
world to perform in places as diverse as Singapore, Melbourne, Calcutta, Bangkok and
America. She began her career as a band singer, and soon emerged as a solo act, singing
in English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Malay, Thai, Arabic, Indonesian, Italian and
French. In 1972, she formulated her own musical, directing and starring in 'Pei Niang Niang',
a modern interpretation of the classic Chinese folk tale Madam White Snake.
Pan has also had success as an occasional actress, winning a Golden Horse Award for her
supporting role as Leslie Cheung's mother in the Hong Kong movie Days of Being Wild.
Wong Kar-Wai later recast her as landlady Mrs. Suen in his acclaimed 60's drama In the
Mood For Love. Pan's music can be heard in many Hong Kong films, including the recent
HK drama Colour Blossoms.
Today, Rebecca Pan resides in Hong Kong and has no plans of retiring anytime soon.
