Michael Chow Man Kin was a busy guy in the 1990's. While Hong Kong cinema was riding
high, so was he, acting in a motley assortment of films. His early film roles generally had
him playing your run of the mill jerk in stuff like Eighth Happiness, (a brash jock), Inspector
Chocolate (Michael Hui's office nemesis), City War (a gay villain caricature), and
The Inspector Wears Skirts (the two-timing boyfriend).
Although not quite an action star, the muscular actor soon emerged in a few action movies.
In Miracles (1989), Chow plays a gangster who arm wrestles Jackie Chan. Danny Lee cast
him in lead and supporting roles in a few cop films (four in 1995 alone). He and Lee played
police partners in Asian Connection, an effective crime film set in Taiwan.
Like Danny Lee, Michael also has the distinction of having attempted to portray the late
Bruce Lee on screen. The Spirit of the Dragon, however, was a comedy- a forte of Chow's.
Michael Chow gained the stamp of a funny fellow in "buddy" flicks, Lunar New Year comedies,
and spooky horror comedies. His presentation at the podium of the 1995 Hong Kong Film
Awards with Law Kar Ying got laughs from his peers in the audience. In 1996 Chow made use
of his contacts in the industry to star in a meritable action-comedy vehicle, Mr. Mumble.
Though Michael has appeared in HK movies every year since 1988, he also co-produced and
starred in a 2001 U.S. production. An independent film shot in California's Bay area, Kung
Phooey parodied martial arts movies. More recently Chow co-starred in Tsui Hark's effort
The Era of Vampires (2002), directed by former collaborator Wellson Chin.
