(Chan Sing, Chen Hsing, Chen Xing)

                                 Actor

There's hardly a kung fu star in existence who has not, at some point, felt the wrath of

martial arts heavy Chen Sing. Chen's forceful presence dominated the genre throughout

the 1970's and early 80's in dozens of pictures in which he almost always played the

bad guy, making him among the most recognizable faces in kung fu cinema.

Chen Sing began his career at Shaw Brothers, appearing in several of Chang Cheh's

classics starring David Chiang and Ti Lung. In 1976, Lo Wei cast him as the Japanese

villain in the 'sequel' to Fist of Fury, New Fist of Fury starring a young Jackie Chan.

Jackie was just one of the scores of actors who had to contend with Chen Sing onscreen.

Others include Wang TaoYasuaki KurataBruce Li, Chu Kong, Stephen Tung Wai

Carter Wong, Bruce Le, Phillip Ko Fei, Jim Kelly, Billy Chong, Jimmy Wang Yu,

David Chiang Ti Lung, Chan Wai Man, Meng Fei, John Liu, Chen Kuan Tai

                                                                                 and Angela Mao Ying

Chen had fun with his tough guy image in two famous Hui Brothers comedies-

Security Unlimited (1981), as the leader of a group thieves, and Aces Go Places (1982),

where he played the boss of a turtlenecked crime syndicate opposite Sam Hui and Karl Maka.

The following year Chen played himself in John Woo's comedy Plain Jane To the Rescue.

During a movie shoot, Josephine Siao played a stand in for an actress who was to be

repeatedly slapped by Chen, who did not pull his punches in the slightest for poor Siao.

After being pummelled one too many times, Siao remarks, "Damn Chen Sing!"

In actuality, Chen was noted for his consummate professionalism- even Siao herself used

him in her 1976 directorial triumph Jumping Ash. Though his image was concretely set

as the bonecrushing bad guy, Chen Sing did play heroes on a few occasions- often

                                                                              as a solemn Buddhist monk!

Chen was the title character in Sammo Hung's spectacular directorial debut, The Iron

Fisted Monk (1977). Chen also took the title role in Shaolin Monk, where he portrayed

the Indian Zen Buddhist Bodhidharma, who is said to have introduced Shaolin

                                                                                         kung fu to China.
